Your company is like a bus with a very specific destination – business success! Your very first and most important step when gearing up to thrive in a VUCA world, is not (as you would think) to overhaul and service the vehicle. Whether you are driving a luxury cruiseliner or a skorokoro in need of some attention, is besides the point. What is of vital importance, is the people that will coming along for the ride. I cannot stress enough, the importance of having the right people in the right positions, doing the right things. People are the heartbeat of your business. The right people, increase morale, and ignite purpose and productivity. Measure, map and mine your workforce potential.  Make 100% sure that there is not a single employee who feels like a square peg in a round hole. Every person in your organization can contribute to a healthy bottom line when they are placed correctly. Furthermore, the highest performing teams are the ones that fit dynamically. Keep this in mind when reshuffling your workforce. Talking about reshuffling, don’t be afraid to move people around, to match the best people to the right environment where they can thrive and contribute to the reaching of their own and your company’s goals. Another hard decision to make, but one that is vital to your ultimate success, is to assess the role of every single individual and rather downsizing your staff complement, creating a space for someone that may be better suited to that specific position. Also make sure that you have an accurate picture of the type of person you need for your company’s ultimate success. Generate your own custom-made set of rules in line with your company’s objectives and culture instead of using generic industry standards, stereotypical benchmarks, or a competitor’s culture. For a glance at what we at MIT see as the best course of action, I wrote an article about the steps to take to Boost your Business Immunity to Thrive in a VUCA world. Feel free to read it here.
